How tragic is the fate of Indonesia’s economic thinkers who have to admit to being “more ignorant” and less understanding of the nation’s economy than the IMF.
A leading figure in a political party who declined the number of voters in the 2004 legislative election commented sympathetically that “now the people are no longer stupid” that is proven to no longer vote on political parties that do not show partiality in the people’s economic interests. Even though political parties which are now more in demand by the people will not necessarily be more in favor of the people’s economy, these “people” do not hesitate to leave the old political parties which are considered to have “betrayed” them.
Now we can ask how people have obtained “education”, so that they become “smarter” in choosing leaders who are considered better, who are expected to be more aligned with their interests. It is also interesting to ask, why on the other hand there is an impression that there is a “setback in quality” of leaders who are now inclined to become “more ignorant”, that is, just fighting for power, which means giving more importance to personal and group interests rather than the interests of many people who actually must be protected and fighting for its economic interests.
It might be concluded that people are becoming smarter through “free education outside of school”, through practical experiences that are full of struggle, learning while doing, and learning while struggling (learning by doing and learning by struggling). If this is true we have the right to question the role of our experts and educational figures in educating the community, both indirectly to young people and directly to the community. It seems that our people and society have become smarter precisely because of the “hard-to-galvanize” situations and conditions in their economic and social life.
It is indeed ironic if it turns out that our elites are “increasingly stupid” because they are spoiled by the accumulation of material resulting from high economic growth, whereas on the other hand the people and society are “getting smarter” because (forced) to continue to fight against the poverty that is always suffering.
